CHAPTER 6

NICK

“Cannonball!” I hear someone yell, before a loud pounding splash follows, along with laughter and cheers. I step through the ornate wrought-iron gate, into the lush outdoor entertaining space of Brock Donovan, the Donovans’ eldest son.

The home is a masterpiece in itself, but the yard… is spectacular. The enormous pool dazzles in the afternoon sun, sending flashes of light bouncing around the trees and colorful patio furniture. People are everywhere - swimming, lounging in the sun, chatting at the covered tables. There’s even a group playing corn hole on the grass across the path. Food, fun, and tropical drinks skewered with chunks of fruit - definitely my kind of relaxation. The kind you need after months and months of hard work.

We’d made it to fall, but the weather is still unseasonably warm. Case in point, the ability to have a pool party just days away from Halloween.

I’m already feeling the heat, so find an empty lounge chair and pull off my T-shirt. I scan the crowd for the only person who’s ever on my mind these days.

Vi.

It had been a few weeks since I’d taken her back to her cabin when she hurt her ankle. I’d wanted to stay so badly. Hell, I’d wanted to kiss her, to tell her how crazy she made me, and how I couldn’t stand thinking about not having her next to me day in and day out.

But I chickened out. I told myself she’d been drinking, and it’s not right to take advantage, but mostly I worried she’d be afraid the intensity of my feelings. The ones I never used to have before she came into my life, and the ones that I’m now having a bitch of time hiding.

“Hey boss man,” Tasha says from behind me, startling me out of my thoughts. “Looking jacked.”

I turn, and she pulls down her sunglasses and whistles.

I wave her off, but inside I’m glad I did the quick set of push-ups just before I arrived. I flex absentmindedly.

Hector walks up in neon swim trunks and a Hawaiian shirt. “You ready to relax, Nick? I sure am. I can’t believe we’re only about a month away from completion.”

Shaking my head, I grab a tall frothy glass of something from a woman walking by with a tray and thank her.

“Me neither,” I finally answer. “Very cool of Mr. Donovan and Brock to throw this party to celebrate.”

They both nod, Tasha swaying to the soft rock music filtered throughout the yard.

I take a sip of my drink. Pineapple and rum. “Wow. I could probably drink ten of these.”

Tasha counts on her fingers. “I think I’ve already had three. Which means I’m gonna need some food. You guys want to come with?”

“I will,” Hector says. “I saw elote!”

“I’m going to lounge for a minute and let this drink sink in,” I say, then ask innocently, “Has Violet shown up yet?”

Hector and Tasha exchange a look.

“She’s here all right,” Tasha says. “Just follow the trail of drooling men.”

What?

Hector and Tasha laugh as they walk away.
